FEATURED ARTWORK
Jimbo Hart’s sculpture is a magical light show that dazzles the eye and tickles the mind. Using recycled electronics, old appliances, exotic lighting, and a wide variety of neon and plasma lighting, Jimbo creates a paradoxical machine that makes us smile. His recollection of the 60’s when nuclear energy was not only the apex destructive power but also the predicted power source of the future is a source of inspiration. The atom was forecasted to be a part of our everyday lives, making our lives simpler and creating an atomic utopia. Scientists convinced journalists and the public, atomic energy’s awesome destructive power would be harnessed for the enjoyment and convenience of the everyday consumer in the form of atomic cars, nuclear household appliances, home air conditioning and home thermonuclear power systems. All in a simple, compact, maintenance free, easy to operate form. Jimbo’s art uses irony and exaggeration to focus on the absurdity of those predictions and the everyday dilemma we all face in using the new ‘simplified’, ‘modern’ technologies that complicate our every day lives. From his ‘Atomic Decrapulator’ (2003) that replaced the every day toilet/sewerage system to his ‘Atomic Clock’ (1999), Jim’s atomic art magnifies the role technology plays in complicating our lives, and does it in a way that is mentally and visually stimulating as well as fun to watch. Jimbo’s atomic art involves the spectator in its flow of lights, electrical energy and composition and opens the imagination to new ideas while challenging us to figure out how the piece operates. Jimbo says, ‘My art is meant to simply make the spectators smile, a combination of eye candy and brain teaser that pokes fun at modern science and technology’. There is beauty as well as wit in Jimbo’s vision and he helps us laugh at our current technological predicament. It is the involvement of all our senses while making us think that helps Jimbo’s creations strike a cord within each of us. |
